For Gollum's literary origins, scholars have compared Gollum to the shrivelled hag Gagool in Rider Haggard's 1885 novel King Solomon's Mines and to the subterranean Morlocks in H. They have noted, too, that Gollum is not wholly evil, and that he has a part to play in the will of Eru Iluvatar, the omnipotent god of Middle-earth, necessary to the destruction of the Ring. Gollum finally seized the Ring from Frodo Baggins at the Cracks of Doom in Mount Doom in Mordor, but he fell into the fires of the volcano, where both he and the Ring were destroyed.Ĭommentators have described Gollum as a psychological shadow figure for Frodo and as an evil guide in contrast to the wizard Gandalf, the good guide. Bilbo Baggins found the Ring and took it for his own, and Gollum afterwards pursued it for the rest of his life. Centuries of the Ring's influence twisted Gollum's body and mind, and, by the time of the novels, he "loved and hated, as he loved and hated himself." Throughout the story, Gollum was torn between his lust for the Ring and his desire to be free of it. Gollum referred to the Ring as "my precious" or "precious", and it extended his life far beyond natural limits. Sméagol obtained the Ring by murdering his relative Déagol, who found it in the River Anduin. In The Lord of the Rings it is stated that he was originally known as Sméagol, corrupted by the One Ring, and later named Gollum after his habit of making "a horrible swallowing noise in his throat". Gollum was a Stoor Hobbit of the River-folk who lived near the Gladden Fields. He was introduced in the 1937 fantasy novel The Hobbit, and became important in its sequel, The Lord of the Rings. If this medication does not work, we may have to look to amputate his leg, but he is certainly a lot happier now that the pain is under control! By sponsoring Mika, you will help us pay for future investigation into his health problems as well as treatment.Gollum is a fictional character in J. The material is too close to the spine to remove, but Mika has now started on antibiotics, pain medication and a medication to help with the nerve pain. No one knows exactly what this substance is or how it got there, but it is likely that nerve damage is causing his toes to tingle a bit, hence the chewing. A recent CT scan shows that Mika has a small, metal-like piece of material on his spine which is causing the problems with his leg. Sadly, this didn't change anything and Mika was still chewing on his toes. Mika came to us and was bonded with fellow long-term resident, Popeye. His owners, wanting the best for Mika, decided to surrender him to us as they thought maybe he was lonely and distressed living without another rabbit. Not long later, he started chewing on the toes of that leg and causing quite severe damage. However, is it fair that these animals will never have a family of their own, just because they're not strong enough to leave the rescue? This is where sponsoring comes in.īeautiful Mika is a slightly strange bunny! He one day became suddenly paralysed in one of his hind legs for reasons no one knew. These are just two examples of the extra needs that some of our animals have. Some of our permanent residents have never been fed a proper diet and so have dental problems, while others have been confined to such a tiny space for such a long time that they have severe behavioural issues. Some of these animals are so damaged that they are unable to be rehomed due to needing ongoing treatment for permanent health or behavioural conditions and so remain under the care of the rescue for the rest of their lives. These animals suffer and are often in pain, needing extensive veterinary treatment and lots of extra care. At Furlock Holmes, we take in animals that have been neglected and mistreated. Although many of the animals who enter the rescue are rehomed to forever families of their own, some of our residents are not that lucky.
